How Assessments Work

StarSkaters and Competitive Skaters may advance through the Skate Canada Assessment program in several areas: Freeskate, Dance, Skills and Interpretive. It takes many years of hard work to complete all the assessment levels.

Assessments are divided into: Club and Regional Assessments

Club Assessments

  • STAR 1-5 Freeskate
  • STAR 1-GOLD Skating Skills
  • STAR 1-5 Dance
  • STAR 5 Artistic

Regional Assessments

  • STAR 6-Gold Freeskate
  • STAR 6-GOLD Dances
  • STAR 7-GOLD Artistic
  • All competitive Assessments

Club assessments are done on home club ice and assessed by a certified coach assessor. All assessments must be approved by your coach. To apply for Club Assessment fill out the MSC Assessment Application form. Once you have completed the fillable PDF form, click on 'file' and select 'send' or 'share' to email, or save to your computer and email to: [email protected]

Regional assessment days are scheduled every few months by the Region. Regional assessments are centralized, which means that skaters from throughout the BC Coast Region are expected to travel to designated club rinks in the Lower Mainland to do their assessments. To apply for a Regional Assessment please follow the link: Coast Registry

Volunteers are used to coordinate and run the Regional assessment days. Did you know that the judges at the Regional assessment days are volunteers too?

Proper skating attire including, skating dress or competition outfit is mandatory for all assessments.

Assessments done at Competitions

Some assessments may be taken at competitions. To take an assessment at a competition means the skater must skate in the level above what they have already passed. This is called “skating up”. Registration for assessments at competitions is done online at Coast Registry

Assessment Results

Skaters will know if they passed or need to retry their assessment(s) immediately after a Club assessment is complete. At a Regional Assessment day, skaters will know their results by the end of the assessment day or competition. Coaches will receive the Assessment sheets with the evaluator's marks and comments shortly after the assessment day, and will review the sheets with their skaters.
